Walsall’s main products are based around enclosures in the increased safety, intrinsic safety and flameproof protection classes with approvals for the integration of a wide range of electrical apparatus. Enclosures are available in a variety of materials, including stainless and mild steel, fiberglass reinforced plastic, aluminum, and cast metal. All product ranges are certified for use as a combination if more complex system solutions are required. As a complement to the core products, other product ranges include lighting, signaling equipment, emergency shutdown equipment, and installation accessories such as cable glands, thread conversion adaptors, stopping plugs and breather drain devices, which can all be used in hazardous areas.

In order to ensure continued market growth, Walsall was delighted to enter into cooperation with Pepperl+Fuchs, a company having a well-established distribution organization. Through the acquisition of Walsall Ltd., Pepperl+Fuchs will expand its existing process automation product range and enter the electromechanical explosion protection market.

By combining the product and manufacturing strengths of Walsall with the expertise and sales network of Pepperl+Fuchs, this vertical integration will allow us to respond to our customers’ requirements faster and with more comprehensive components and solutions.

Walsall introduces “FAST TRACK “ customer specific Exe terminal enclosures

Following a series of requests from customers, Walsall Ltd, UK based manufacturers of electrical equipment for use in hazardous environments, has launched it’s “FAST TRACK” service for delivering fully customized Ex e/i terminal enclosure solutions within 48 hrs. Already available in it’s UAE and Singapore facilities, the strategy is now to be rolled out across the UK.

Walsall FXL Ex e / Ex ia Stainless Steel Enclosure

Walsall is unique in the fact that it actually manufactures it’s own enclosures hence control over customer satisfaction is not left to outside sources. The decision has been taken to introduce a stock of standard sized enclosures in stainless steel and GRP which can then be rapidly modified to suit any customer requirement.

The benefit to the customer is that the modifications are taking place on dedicated state of the art CNC machinery as opposed to low cost equipment generally used by assemblers authorized by manufacturers to customize their product. However, probably the main benefit is that there is no “authorized assembler” margin for the end user to have to pay for.

As an added bonus marking the new launch, Walsall is offering free delivery on all boxes ordered “Fast Track” for delivery UK mainland on or before June 30th 2009.

Walsall Become Carbon Zero

(Dec 08) As part of our commitment to protect the environment and help tackle climate change, we have offset the carbon dioxide emissions that we as a company create to achieve CarbonZero accreditation.

To achieve this CarbonZero status we have been working with carbon management company co2balance to calculate our carbon footprint, and then offset our carbon emissions through their African Energy Efficiency Projects.

The carbon offsetting projects that we are supporting supplies energy saving cooking equipment to local communities in Kenya.

As a result of our CarbonZero status, 16 energy efficient stoves will be built for local families in Kenya. The stove will replace fuel intensive open fires and will reduce the amount of firewood needed for cooking by 70%.

As well as saving carbon emissions, the project has social and financial benefits to the community as well as an environmental one. The stoves reduce the amount of time spent collecting firewood, are built locally (creating employment), and the reduced need for firewood helps prevent deforestation.

To find out more on the projects that we are supporting, visit www.co2balance.com

Aston Martin Lagonda Advance Manufacturing Engineers choose Walsall

(Oct 08) Explosion protection specialists Walsall Ltd, following an invite by Aston Martin’s advance manufacturing engineering manager, Mr Barry Cole, presented a wide range of explosion protected electrical equipment primarily for use in the plant’s paint spraying facility and fuel pump areas.

Aston Martins rank highly among the most beautiful cars on the road. Granted, they all look pretty much the same – evolutions on a common theme that has ranged from the DB7 through to the upcoming production Rapide four-door – but each one is a study in elegance and sophistication.

Future models, however, are set to be conceived and designed at a new facility which the now independent British sportscar marque is in the process of establishing in Gaydon, Warwickshire, England, which the company built to replace its historic home at Newport Pagnell.

The new design center is part of an ambitious program being undertaken by Aston Martin, under the leadership of CEO Dr. Ulrich Bez and chairman David Richards, to dramatically expand its market reach. We can't wait to see what the boys at Aston cook up next at its fancy new facility.

Walsall products of particular interest are fluorescent lighting with toughened glass overtubes which facilitate easy clean down and have high IP rating, IP66 Exde emergency stop pushbuttons & IP66 Exde break glass units, sounders and beacons.

Horizon Zone 1 Floodlight 2009 Launch

(Oct 08) Walsall Ltd, the manufacturer of hazardous area electrical equipment will be producing the new Horizon floodlight from January 2009. The Horizon is suitable for use in zone 1 gas and dust areas and will therefore be of interest to anyone requiring lighting for facilities such as oil and gas, storage and offshore installations. ATEX and IECEx approvals will be available initially, with GOST-R and CCE to follow. Power outputs are from 150-400W with either high pressure sodium or metal halide lamps.

The Horizon has been designed with installers in mind. Ease of access for cable terminations has been achieved with a large Exe chamber, and re-lamping is performed through a generously sized opening into the lamp chamber. The dedicated re-lamping opening avoids the need to expose or disturb the control gear. The control gear itself consists of an overrated magnetic ballast to keep running temperatures low and a proprietary microprocessor based ignitor. The ignitor is able to detect failing lamps and will disconnect the lamp after three failed starting attempts, thus ensuring the longevity of the ballast. Power factor correction is provided as standard. In order to allow for reduced maintenance, there are no exposed flamepaths.

The use of corrosion resistant aluminium ensures a lightweight fitting that is suitable for harsh marine environments. The mounting bracket and fixings are of stainless steel, thus avoiding future maintenance problems.

The Horizon floodlight has been developed to complement the existing Orbex wellglass for zone 1 applications, and the FLN floodlight for zone 2 applications. As such, Walsall Ltd will be able to cater for a wide variety of applications requiring high intensity discharge lighting.

Vantage range of sounders and beacons ready for 2009 launch

In January 2009 Walsall Ltd will be launching the Vantage range of xenon beacons, sounders and loudspeakers for use in zone 1 gas and dust hazardous areas. These new products will be of use to those designing and installing emergency signaling systems in a wide range of process industries where there may be flammable gas or dust in the atmosphere. Full ATEX and IECEx certification for IIC areas with GOST and CCE to follow will allow for worldwide deployment. The power output of the beacon is factory set at either 5, 10, 15 or 21J, while the sounder can be user set to a wide variety of tones to suit local practice.

The Vantage units have been designed for flexibility. For this reason, units can operate from either 24/48VDC or 110/230VAC. Both telephone and volt free interfaces are available, along with two wire operation for the sounder where the polarity of the DC supply can select between the two user set tones. The loudspeaker units can be supplied with a 100V line transformer if necessary, or not if an 8Ω system is in use. All units use an Ex de construction concept and as such installers will only have to deal with Exe cable glands and terminations. In conjunction with corrosion free GRP construction, this will give lower installation and maintenance costs. Where possible high temperature rated components have been used to ensure a long service life.

The Vantage range complements the emergency signaling and shutdown equipment that Walsall already offer, including emergency stop buttons, fire alarm call points and break glass units.

Walsall Launches New Website

(Oct 08) World leading manufacturer of electrical equipment for hazardous environments, Walsall Ltd, has launched a much improved website designed to allow users a virtual one-stop “specify & buy” service within the bounds of a very pleasant operating environment. The existing successful QuotEx system has been upgraded to include a multitude of features.

QuotEx

Once registered, users can rapidly generate their own quotation powered by the site’s database of products. Individual discounts are applied at the time of registering and protected by unique password protection. The website automatically produces the current lead time from a link to Walsall’s FMS (Flexible Manufacturing System) hence a multi-product quotation can be downloaded quite literally within minutes. No more agonising waiting for that promised quotation that never arrives! Non-standard product can be created using the new “Entry Planner” system which allows users to view all of the enclosure ranges and insert entries & terminals. Coming soon will be the ability to add control components.
Order Online
The user can then accept the quotation at the touch of a button and convert it into an order. Alternatively, it can be saved and stored for a later date.

Walsall Implements Flexible Manufacturing Systems

(Sept 08) UK based manufacturer of explosion protected electrical equipment, Walsall Ltd, has completed the implementation of a flexible manufacturing system across all divisions.
A flexible manufacturing system (FMS) is a manufacturing system in which there is some amount of flexibility that allows the system to react in the case of changes, whether predicted or unpredicted. This flexibility is generally considered to fall into two categories, which both contain numerous subcategories.
The first category, machine flexibility, covers the system's ability to be changed to produce new product types, and ability to change the order of operations executed on a part. The second category is called routing flexibility, which consists of the ability to use multiple machines to perform the same operation on a part, as well as the system's ability to absorb large-scale changes, such as in volume, capacity, or capability.
Most FMS systems comprise of three main systems. The work machines which are often automated CNC machines are connected by a material handling system to optimize parts flow and the central control computer which controls material movements and machine flow.

The main advantages of an FMS is its high flexibility in managing manufacturing resources like time and effort in order to manufacture a new product. The best application of an FMS is found in the production of small sets of products like those from a mass production.

Advantages

  • Productivity increment due to automation
  • Preparation time for new products is shorter due to flexibility
  • Saved labor cost, due to automation
  • Improved production quality, due to automation

The Walsall production facility is structured on a cellular basis with one cell responsible for one discrete product range. The FMS have been integrated independantly within each cell which gives the company the flexibility to offer fast response on combination product orders even if certain products are customised and non-standard.
